What If the Driver Who Hit You Was Uninsured?

Gratitude is some people’s first instinct in the face of adversity. If you get injured in a car accident, you might be grateful that your injuries were not worse and that you will eventually recover. You might be thankful that your closest family members were not in the car with you and that they did not get injured, but that they are nearby to keep you company as you recover from your injuries. If the physical pain is no match for your unbreakable spirit, the financial realities are almost sure to put a dent in your good mood. Hardly anyone these days has enough financial security to pay out of pocket for the treatment of even a minor injury, so if you need surgery, you will feel the financial effects for years to come, even if you have health insurance. If you are determined to stay in the gratitude mindset, though, be grateful that you live in New Jersey, where personal injury protection (PIP) insurance is the rule rather than the exception. Even if the other driver in the accident did not have insurance, and even if you bear some or all of the fault for the accident, your PIP insurance will reimburse you for your accident-related medical expenses, but getting insurance to cover the full amount takes a lot of work. If you got injured in a car accident and the payment issues are still unresolved, contact an auto accident lawyer.
You Shouldn’t Have to Hold a Fundraiser to Cover Your Medical Bills
In August 2025, Dawn King was driving near her home in Morristown when another car ran a red light and struck her vehicle. Her injuries were less severe than they could have been, because she was wearing a seatbelt and the airbags in her car deployed, but she suffered injuries to her arm, hand, and wrist. She had one surgery to install a metal plate, and she will need another surgery to remove the plate before she can begin physical therapy.
Dawn’s family started an online fundraiser to cover the medical expenses that her health insurance is unable to cover and to pay for transportation until she is able to drive again. The fundraiser’s web page said that insurance issues with the case are still pending, which may delay her insurance settlement. It said that the driver that hit her admitted fault for the accident, but the person who posted the fundraising page was not sure whether the at fault driver had insurance.
The generosity of friends and strangers is certainly a reason to be grateful, but you have a legal right to compensation from the relevant insurance companies after getting injured in a car accident. A personal injury lawyer can help you settle your insurance claims in a timely manner.
