What Happens When Pets Get Injured in Car Accidents?

Many dogs are enthusiastic about riding in cars, but they are unaware of the dangers. There are plenty of risks associated with transporting dogs or other domestic animals in your car, even though our furry friends are blissfully unaware of them. The design of cars has steadily improved over the years to keep humans safe; wherever you sit in a car, you will have a seatbelt to prevent you from being ejected in the event of a collision and an airbag to soften the impact. Child safety seats are also designed to work well with current vehicle designs to protect children if the car gets into an accident. The same cannot be said for pets. Dogs and cats are safest in pet carriers, but many animals are not content to remain in a carrier for the duration of a ride, so we often find them riding unrestrained in cars. If a pet gets injured in a car accident, you can claim the pet’s vet bills among your accident-related financial losses, but they count as property damage, not as medical expenses. Two Men and a Dog Die in Multi-Vehicle Collision in Wanaque
On a Sunday evening in October 2025, four vehicles collided on Ringwood Avenue near the entrance to Haskell Elementary School; since it was a weekend, no students or employees were present at the school at the time of the accident. Witnesses said that the cars were destroyed beyond recognition. Two drivers were killed; they were a 26-year-old man from Wanaque who was driving a Honda Accord and a 63-year-old man who was driving a Lexus. A dog was found at the scene of the accident, and police believe that it was ejected from one of the vehicles and died of its injuries. Because there was a dog carrier in the Lexus, police determined that the dog belonged to the Lexus driver. News reports did not give any information about the occupants of the other vehicles, except to say that their injuries were not life-threatening, even though their vehicles sustained severe damage.
The wreckage was so extensive that cleanup took many hours. Passaic County announced that Haskell Elementary School would open on a two-hour delay, since it took more than twelve hours to clear the debris and get the roads near the school in operational condition again. No information was available about the causes of the accident. The injured people and the surviving families have the right to seek compensation through insurance claims or personal injury or wrongful death lawsuits.
