Snowboards and Cars Don’t Mix

Snowboarders

Certain types of fun can only be had in the immediate aftermath of a snowstorm. Just ask anyone who has tried to build a snowman out of snow that has melted during the day and re-frozen overnight. It doesn’t work; it is only possible to construct a snowman out of the fresh, fluffy stuff. Likewise, if you are going to make snow angels, do it someplace where salt trucks fear to tread; Sludge Angels might be a fun name for a heavy metal band or a foul-mouthed YouTube channel about video games marketed to adult gamers, but it is not a snow day activity that any parent would approve of. Likewise, sledding and snowboarding at resorts that keep a large area open for winter recreation is only for rich people; the rest of us have to engage in winter recreation in our own neighborhoods when we can, which is before the schools reopen and before people have shoveled enough snow off of their driveways to get their cars out of their garages. If you are going to go snowboarding in an urban area in New Jersey, do it as far away from cars as you can. If you got injured in an accident in New Jersey when snowy roads and walkways put non-motorized vehicles at greater risk than usual of being hit by cars, contact an auto accident lawyer.

Snowboarder Struck by Car in Lakewood

On January 25, just after Winter Storm Fern had dumped snow and ice on New Jersey, a car was driving in the northbound lanes of Faraday Avenue in Lakewood, towing a snowboard. As one might expect, the snowboard drifted into the southbound lanes, and a car hit it. As of the time of the most recent news reports, the snowboarder was still hospitalized but was in stable condition. The New Jersey 101.5 website did not release the name of the snowboarder or the names of the drivers of either of the cars.

The driver who was towing the snowboard is facing criminal charges for endangering another person. In a nearby state, several other young people are facing criminal charges for attempting the “table surfing” stunt that has been the subject of popular Tik Tok videos recently; it involves towing an overturned card table with someone standing on it. These stunts have led to serious injuries and at least one fatality. Regardless of the outcome of the criminal case, the injured snowboarder has the right to file a personal injury lawsuit against the driver who was towing the snowboard. The injured person can seek compensation for accident-related financial losses such as medical expenses and lost income.
