Pedestrian Accident Hot Spots

Most places in the United States are not especially pedestrian friendly. People who brag about living in walkable cities are the ones who are so committed to having an Instagrammably perfect life, and who have the means to do so, that you are counting the days before their children begin to voice their aspirations to work at Walmart and eat Doritos for breakfast, like normal people do. The people who live in places where people do the most walking for practical reasons, in the inner cities and economically depressed rural towns, never brag about getting their 10,000 steps a day. Places where there is little public transportation, where sidewalks are in short supply, and where a lot of households cannot afford cars, are a perfect storm for pedestrian accidents. Cars can strike pedestrians anywhere, but these accidents are not evenly distributed. Some towns and roads become infamous for the number of pedestrians who get hit by cars there. No matter the circumstances surrounding the accident, pedestrians who get hit by cars have the right to file insurance claims and lawsuits and seek compensation for their accident-related financial losses. If you got hit by a car while you were walking and are struggling with medical bills, contact an auto accident lawyer.
Nutley Resident Circulates Petition After a Series of Pedestrian Accidents Shock the Community
In 2025 and the years leading up to it, accidents where motor vehicles struck pedestrians were disturbingly common in Nutley. In the spring of 2025, there were two such accidents within two weeks of each other, and one of them was fatal. Nutley resident Desiree Bernasconi, who was not a relative of either of the accident victims, started a petition on the Change.org website, and many fellow Nutley residents signed it. Bernasconi stated in the petition that she knew firsthand the devastation of pedestrian accidents firsthand, because years earlier, two of her close relatives had been hit by cars and suffered life-altering injuries.
The petition requested that the city of Nutley install flashing lights near pedestrian crossings, to make these designated crosswalks more visible both to pedestrians and to drivers. News reports did not indicate the city’s response to the petition or how many signatures it received, but the pedestrian accidents in Nutley continued. In January 2026, a car struck a woman and two children who were walking in Nutley. The family was walking near a diner on Centre Street. All three family members sustained injuries serious enough to require hospitalization, but none of their injuries were life-threatening. News sources did not release the names of ages of the injured people. They also did not indicate whether the driver who struck the pedestrians will receive criminal charges.
