Improper Footwear and New Jersey Driving Accidents

Pedal

If you want to see fashion shows or star-studded events where everyone shows up wearing custom made outfits that cost more than your annual income, go to Manhattan. Conversely, if you want to see people who look so gorgeous in what they wear that you can’t take your eyes off of them, despite that their outfits are assembled from modestly priced items purchased on Amazon or at Walmart, go to New Jersey. In New Jersey, we know that fashion is not about what you wear; it’s how you wear it. Looking fabulous is a state of mind, and it starts at your feet and works its way up. The people of New Jersey can stop traffic in spike heels, combat boots, retro hi top sneakers, strappy sandals, shiny loafers, or any of a variety of other types of shoes, but not all kinds of footwear are equally appropriate for driving. In fact, the insurance companies might even assign part of the fault for an accident to your improper footwear. If you got injured in a car accident where the at fault driver’s shoes, or lack thereof, were not conducive to safe driving, contact a South Jersey auto accident lawyer.

It Isn’t Illegal to Drive in Flip Flops in New Jersey, but It Isn’t Safe, Either

New Jersey’s driving laws are plenty specific, but they do not specify what kind of shoes you can or cannot wear when you are behind the wheel. It is equally legal to drive in soccer cleats, saddle shoes, snow boots, gladiator sandals, ballet flats, orthopedic shoes, or even those temporary flip flops they give you at the nail salon when you get a pedicure. Sandals and flip flops are popular choices of footwear in New Jersey in the summer, especially around the Jersey shore, and some people even drive barefoot.

It is easy to see why driving in minimal footwear is not a good idea. If you are barefoot and the weather is hot, it might be difficult to step on the brake with the necessary pressure to come to a complete stop in time to avoid a collision. As for flip flops, they give you less control than a structured shoe, so you must step on the gas pedal or the brake with more pressure than you would do in regular shoes; this is especially dangerous if you are not used to driving in flip flops. Even worse, your flip flop can get stuck on the accelerator, brake pedal, or floor mat of your car, delaying your acceleration or braking. According to a survey conducted by the Foot and Wellness Center in Ohio, 1.4 million drivers said that wearing flip flops had led them to cause an accident or only narrowly avoid one.
