Collisions on the New Jersey Turnpike

The New Jersey Turnpike is the stuff of legend. Weary travelers on interstate road trips force themselves to keep going until they cross the border into New Jersey; this way they can enjoy more peaceful rest areas than one finds in other states. The movie Being John Malkovich gets its mystique from the fact that the New Jersey Turnpike serves as a portal between our mundane plane of existence and the surreal inner world of the title character. Once you take away the iconic road signs and pop culture references, though, the New Jersey Turnpike is just another highway, with all the dangers that highways bring with them. Traffic flows quickly without traffic lights to keep its speed in check. Passenger cars share the road with enormous commercial trucks that take what seems like an eternity to change lanes or to come to a complete stop when they brake. Three Family Members Die After Truck Crashes Into SUV Parked on the Shoulder of the New Jersey Turnpike
Elin Waithe was a nutritionist who worked for the Women, Infants and Children program in East Orange; the program provides grocery benefits to pregnant women and to households with children under the age of five. Its purpose is to reduce food insecurity among children. In December 2025, Elin traveled to Maryland with her husband Quacy and the couple’s two teenage daughters. On the drive home, they experienced car trouble while they were on the New Jersey Turnpike in East Windsor Township, and they pulled over onto the shoulder.
While Elin was standing outside the family’s SUV, with the rest of the family inside, a tractor trailer crashed into their vehicle. Elin and Quacy were killed, as was one of their daughters. The other daughter survived but suffered injuries.
News reports identified the driver of the Peterbilt truck that crashed into the family’s SUV as Dmitriy Kara of Philadelphia. He suffered minor injuries in the accident.
Justice for Victims of Truck Accidents
The surviving family members of people killed in truck accidents have the right to file wrongful death lawsuits in civil court against the parties responsible for the accident. In the case of the accident that killed Elin and Quacy Waithe and their daughter, the party most likely to bear legal responsibility for the accident is the company that owns the truck that crashed into the SUV or the company that employs Kara, if they are not both the same company. They have the right to seek economic damages for funeral expenses and for income that the victims would have provided for their family if they had survived, as well as noneconomic damages for the loss of their family members’ companionship.
