Accidents on Frozen Lakes

About ten years ago, when the Internet was blushingly innocent compared to how it is now, there was a running joke about an alleged superhero called Florida Man. The netizens, as people who are chronically online were called in those days, collated a bunch of headlines about Floridians doing mind-bogglingly dangerous or asinine things. The headlines said things like, “Florida Man Loses Foot After Diving Into Crocodile Pond to Retrieve Cell Phone,” and “Florida Man Declaims Miranda Warnings While Throwing Stash of Drugs Over Fence in Plain Sight of Police.” The idea was that to be that audacious and foolhardy must be a superpower. Florida Man’s antics always seemed distinctly Floridian; they were things that can only happen in places where there is a vast array of reptile species and of wannabe celebrities. One can only imagine what would happen if Florida Man had the chance to run wild in the Garbage State, where prolonged freezing temperatures bring out the foolhardy side of people who are so inclined. Rescue Crews Retrieve Truck From Lake After Driver Attempted to Do Donuts on Frozen Surface
The endless parade of snow days after Winter Storm Fern drove everyone in New Jersey slightly crazy. As a result, people attempted dangerous stunts that they ordinarily would not dare, but one New Jersey Man took a bigger risk than most. In certain parts of New Jersey, the thing to do for fun when you have a big truck and no plans is to do donuts in a parking lot, driving in tight circles at high speed, just to prove that your truck is up to the task. In February 2026, a 44-year-old man in Ocean County took his truck to a frozen lake and attempted to do donuts. As you probably could have predicted, his truck fell through the ice. Passing motorists who saw the truck partially submerged in the frozen lake called 911, and rescue crews arrived quickly. They dove under the surface to see if there was anyone in or near the truck, but they found no one. They later found out that the driver had gotten out of the truck on his own and got to safety, but that he had not called the police, because he feared criminal penalties, as he did not have a valid driver’s license. It appears that no one else was in the truck with him at the time of the misadventure. As of February 5, when the NBC 10 news website reported on the story, the empty truck was still submerged in the lake, as rescue crews had been unable to retrieve it.
