The PFAs Class Action Lawsuit

Pan

If you have ever had an easy time cleaning a cooking pan, kept leftovers edible for days in the refrigerator, or bought affordable produce or grocery staples such as bread or pasta, you can thank dangerous chemicals. The non-stick surfaces of cooking utensils, the refrigerant gases that enable refrigerators and other machines to operate, and the pesticides that enable production of crops at the scale to which we have become accustomed are the result of industrial processes that cause environmental pollution. Specifically, they all result in the release of polyfluoroyalkyl substances (PFAs). These chemicals can remain in the air, water, and soil indefinitely and are extraordinarily difficult to remove, which is why they are popularly known as “forever chemicals.” At high enough concentrations, they cause health hazards, such as an increased risk of cancer. Three chemical companies have recently paid a settlement to New Jersey as compensation for their role in polluting New Jersey’s water. To find out more about the PFAs class action lawsuit against Corteva, Chemours, and DuPont, contact a South Jersey defective products lawyer.

DuPont, Chemours, and Corteva Pay Settlement to New Jersey for Chemical Contamination of Water Supply

Three industrial companies that operate in New Jersey signed a settlement with the state of New Jersey in August 2025, in which they agreed to pay $2 billion so that the state can settle claims by people harmed by PFAs in the municipal water near several industrial plants in the state. The three companies contributing to the settlement are DuPont, which makes the non-stick cookware coating Teflon, among other products, Chemours the maker of refrigerant gases, and Corteva the maker of pesticides. The affected sites where these companies polluted the water supply are as follows:

  • Pompton Lake Works in Passaic County
  • Repauno Works in Gloucester County
  • Chambers Works in Salem County
  • The DuPont Parlin site in Middlesex County

Exposure to unsafe levels of PFAs can increase the risk of liver and kidney damage, thyroid disease, and several types of cancer. It can also increase the risk of high blood pressure and obesity. People who were exposed to high levels of PFAs in utero are at risk of low birth weight, reduced fertility, and reduced response to vaccines.

If you lived near one of the production sites from which the contaminants originated at any time in the past 40 years, you should contact a personal injury lawyer about joining the class action lawsuit. You should also contact a lawyer if your mother lived near one of the contaminated production sites when she was pregnant with you. In a class action lawsuit, a large number of plaintiffs file claims to get a share of a large settlement from a defendant that caused widespread damage.
