Lake Accidents on Private Property

RopeSwingLake

Jumping into a lake in New Jersey is less dangerous than it would be in warmer parts of the United States. The lakes of Florida, South Carolina, Louisiana, and nearby states are where the American alligator is most at home, and while the gator’s range seems to be expanding, the northernmost gator sightings have been near the border between North Carolina and Virginia, a safe distance away from New Jersey. Likewise, more than 90 percent of documented cases of the deadly encephalitis caused by the N. fowleri parasite have been people who jumped into lakes, and while the parasite thrives in warm lakes all around the world, most of the infections in the United States have taken place in Florida and Texas. If you doubt that jumping into a lake in the northeastern United States can be dangerous, though, just think of the novel A Separate Peace, where boys at a boarding school spend their leisure time jumping from a tree branch into a lake, until one of them gets seriously injured while attempting this stunt. If you got injured while playing in a lake in New Jersey, contact a South Jersey premises liability lawyer.

Teen Suffers Critical Injuries in Rope Swing Accident in Ocean County Lake

In the summer of 2025, a group of teens went to Hidden Lake. They took turns swinging on a rope swing and jumping into the lake. One boy hit his head on an obstacle in the water after he jumped, knocking him unconscious. His friends pulled him to the surface of the water and held his head above the surface so he would not drown, but they did not try to bring him to shore, fearing that they would make his injuries worse. When first responders arrived, they moved him onto a stretcher and lifted it out of the water by a rope. They transported him by truck until they got to a place where a medevac helicopter could pick him up and airlift him to the hospital.

The Legal Issues

Under the doctrine of premises liability, you can file a personal injury lawsuit if you get injured at a place of business where you were a customer; this includes water theme parks and tour companies that operate boat rides and whitewater rafting adventures. If you did not pay to engage in water recreation, then recreational land use statutes could apply.
