Snow and Overpasses Are a Bad Combination

SnowOverpass

The winter in New Jersey is always a bummer in New Jersey, except for those first few fleeting moments when the snow is so fresh that it has not yet realized where it landed, before it takes on the grayish hue that characterizes the Garbage State for most of the year. This winter has been especially bad, though. One monstrous winter storm after another has left mountains of snow in the road. The snowplows only succeeded in pushing the snow to the side of the road, where it gradually thickened into stalagmite-like masses of ice. Then more snow fell, and the process repeated. Yes, some areas of road are clear enough that you can drive, but the piles of melted and refrozen snow have narrowed the roads by the width of part of a lane, or even by the width of an entire lane. This increases the risk of collisions just because there are more cars trying to travel on less surface area, even if you can avoid sliding on the ice. If you drive over a slippery patch on the road, things can get even worse. If you got injured in a car accident on an icy overpass in New Jersey, contact an auto accident lawyer.

New Jersey Woman Survives Collision That Looked Like Something Straight Out of an Action Movie

On February 24, 2026, there was still plenty of snow on the roads in Ocean County. A 21-year-old woman was driving in the eastbound lanes of I-195 after morning rush hour has ended. The road was slippery, and she lost control of the Hyundai SUV she was driving as she approached mile marker 27.2, which is on an overpass. The car veered off the right side of the road and hit a snowbank, but this only increased its speed. After it struck a concrete barrier, it plunged over the side of the overpass. The SUV landed on Route 9 below the overpass. The driver was taken to the hospital for treatment of her injuries after the accident.

One is more likely to see an accident like this in an action movie than in real life, and it is remarkable that the driver survived at all. It is likewise remarkable that an SUV falling onto the road below did not cause any of the drivers on Route 9 to lose control of their cars and cause a chain reaction collision, or even to strike the SUV that had landed in their path. When the Jersey Shore Online news website published its report about the collision, the accident was still under investigation. If it turns out that a vehicle defect or poor road maintenance contributed to the accident, then the injured driver may have grounds to file a product liability or premises liability claim.
