Rookie Mistakes Can Be Deadly

TeenDriverAccident

Everyone knows that novice drivers make mistakes, and these mistakes, from which new drivers quickly learn, often result in a vehicle colliding with another vehicle or stationary object. The parents of teen drivers hope that, by the time their children learn from their early driving mistakes, no one will have sustained severe injuries. In the best-case scenarios, an embarrassing run in with a neighbor’s mailbox makes for an entertaining story at school the next day. If the mistake is bad enough to result in a traffic ticket or a property damage only accident that results in an increase in car insurance premiums, it can lead to tension between teens and their parents, and sometimes this tension persists long into the teens’ adulthood, long after everyone has forgotten its cause. In some cases, though, a newly licensed teen’s first mistake behind the wheel is far worse. A high school in New Jersey is reeling from the death of a student who was struck by a teen driver’s car while bicycling on the way to school. If you have been injured in a car accident where the at fault driver was a minor at the time of the accident, contact a South Jersey auto accident lawyer.

Teen Driver Strikes Student Biking Home From Brick Memorial School

One Tuesday morning in May 2026, a Brick Memorial student was riding a bicycle during the morning commute to school. He was about half a mile from the school when he biked across Lanes Mill Road at a crosswalk, but before he reached the other side, a car traveling at high speed struck him and knocked him off his bike. The driver did not stop at the scene of the accident, but kept driving. The bicyclist died at the scene of the accident; news sources did not release his name, because he is a minor.

Witnesses described the vehicle that struck the bicyclist as a 2021 BMW, and police located it later that day. They arrested the driver, who is also a minor, for leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death. By the time news reports about the accident were published, the teen driver was still being detained at Ocean County Juvenile Detention Center.

No information is publicly available about the teen driver. Depending on his history and on the ongoing investigation into the accident, he may go through the juvenile justice system or face criminal charges as an adult. Regardless of the outcome of the criminal case, the family of the bicyclist has the right to file a lawsuit against the teen driver’s parents in civil court. Parents are legally responsible for injuries and other damage caused by their minor children.
