Lawnmower Accidents

Landscaper2

If you are prone to worry, you can probably imagine all kinds of horrible ways that things can go wrong with lawnmowers. Perhaps, as a child, you had an elderly neighbor who was missing several fingers, and when you asked why, he muttered something about a lawnmower, and you quickly decided not to ask any more questions about the matter. Maybe you read the first few pages of Stephen King’s “Lawnmower Man” or saw the first few minutes of the movie that borrowed the title, but not much else, from King’s story, and you got so scared that, every time you saw a lawnmower, you imagined it going rogue, and this fear continued until long after you were old enough to operate a motor vehicle. The good news is that, when you operate lawnmowers in their intended manner, the risk of injury is low. The bad news is that, when riding mowers travel in or near roads open to vehicular traffic, the results can be as bad as when a car strikes any other vehicle that has little structure to protect the rider, such as a motorcycle, farm tractor, or bicycle. If you got injured in an accident where a car struck a riding mower, contact an accident lawyer.

Landscaper Suffers Concussion After Falling From Lawnmower Struck by SUV

On December 8, a landscaper from Neptune was at work in Wall Township, riding a lawnmower on the side of Ocean Road. The lawnmower had a trash can attached to the front of it, to collect debris. An SUV that was driving west on Ocean Road struck the lawnmower but did not stop to see if the rider was injured. The crash caused the man to fall from the lawnmower and suffer a concussion and other injuries, which were not life-threatening. By early January, he had been released from the hospital.

Police looked for the car that had struck the lawnmower. The injured man remembered that the vehicle was a grayish khaki SUV. Eventually, police located a vehicle that fit that description, especially since the SUV had damage to its hood and lawn waste stuck to its grill. They arrested the driver, who was 91 years old. He is facing charges for careless driving and for leaving the scene of an accident involving serious bodily injury. According to news reports, the driver of the SUV told the police that he did not think he had struck a vehicle being operated by a person. As far as he knew, he had only struck a tan trash can.

As for the injured landscaper, he can probably get compensation for his medical expenses through his employer’s workers’ compensation insurance. He also has the right to file a personal injury lawsuit against the driver of the SUV.
