Collisions Affecting Elderly Pedestrians

They say that the way to stay healthy into your old age is to remain physically active. Walking is a favorite fitness activity for seniors, because it does not require extraordinary athletic prowess. When you are young, going for a walk seems like a boring activity, but once you are old enough that your children can run and climb, walking as a recreational activity seems delightfully peaceful. Once you are retired and not always rushing to get to work on time, a leisurely walk is the highlight of your day. An elderly man in Ventnor had this figured out. He continued his daily walks until he was in his 90s, making him a role model for New Jersey’s aging population. Earlier this month, though, a car accident put a damper on his fitness regimen. If there is a silver lining to this, it is that there is no age limit for seeking compensation from the responsible parties if you get hit by a car and suffer serious injuries. If you are a retiree who got hit by a car while you were walking, contact a South Jersey auto accident lawyer.
Driver Leaves Scene After Striking Nonagenarian Pedestrian in Ventnor
A 92-year-old man walking on Ventnor Avenue was a familiar sight for the residents and business owners in the area. The ABC 6 Action News website did not release the man’s name, but many of the local residents and business owners know him. During afternoon rush hour on November 20, the man was crossing Ventnor Avenue on foot; he was not crossing at an intersection, although nearby intersections have crosswalks.
A couple that lives nearby heard a loud crash. They rushed downstairs and saw a man lying in the road. The wife went inside to get a blanket, and the couple called 911 and attended to the man until first responders arrived. The owner of a liquor store showed police footage from the surveillance camera outside his store which had captured the accident. It showed a white SUV strike the elderly man and send him flying; the man’s shoes landed about 30 feet away from him. The SUV did not stop. As of the time that the news reports were published, the driver of the SUV had not been identified, and the injured pedestrian was still hospitalized in serious condition.
Justice After a Hit and Run Accident
Leaving the scene of an accident that results in physical injuries before the police and first responders arrive is a crime, and hit and run drivers face criminal charges, but only if police can find them. If there are no witnesses, no one may ever know the identity of the at fault driver. In either case, the injured person has the right to compensation for his or her injuries. The first place to start is by filing a claim with your personal injury protection (PIP) insurance.
