Car Falls Into Hackensack River

Chain reaction collisions are one of the known hazards of driving on the highway. Since they only happen in heavy traffic, many of them involve vehicles traveling at low speed. Likewise, there are no intersections on the highway, so unless a car crosses the median, all the cars are going in the same direction, so each car strikes the one ahead of it from the rear. Low speed collisions and rear end collisions each carry a relatively low risk of serious injuries. Therefore, even though three or more cars might have collided, the worst that happens is that several lanes of traffic get shut down, and the owners and occupants of the vehicles have to deal with expensive bills. Of course, even if your injuries after a car accident are not life-changing, the financial stress associated with the medical bills, vehicle repairs, and managing without your car until it is fixed are. Getting an adequate insurance settlement after a car accident is not easy. It helps to have someone who knows what they are doing negotiate with the insurance companies on your behalf, so that they cannot deceive you or bully you into paying you less than they owe you. Occupants Escape From Vehicle by the Time Rescuers Arrive
On a Monday evening in May 2026, at least three cars collided on the Hackensack River Bridge of I-80. One of the vehicles involved in the accident was an SUV that plunged over the side of the bridge and into the river. An image captured by the Hackensack fire department showed the vehicle diving nose first into the river.
Rescuers used thermal imaging and drones to locate the submerged SUV, and they were able to reach it quickly, but no one was inside. All the occupants of the vehicle had managed to swim to shore by the time the fire department retrieved the SUV from under the water. Several other damaged vehicles were stopped by the side of the road when first responders arrived at the scene. By the time that news reports were published, no information was available about whether anyone had been injured.
Determining fault for chain reaction collisions can be challenging. New Jersey is a comparative negligence state, which means that insurance companies can distribute liability for a car accident among two or more parties, including but not limited to the drivers of the vehicles involved. If you are partially at fault for the accident, you can still get an insurance payout, but the amount you can get is less than the insurance companies would pay you if you did not bear any fault for the accident.
