Nonagenarian Dies in Chain Reaction Collision on I-80
In May 2026, a chain reaction collision caused havoc in the westbound lanes of I-80 in Rockaway Township. The trouble started when a Chevrolet on the road shoulder was reversing, trying to get back into a lane of traffic so that it could exit the highway at exit 34B. A Hyundai that was approaching in the lane into which the Chevrolet was backing struck the rear of the Chevrolet. This caused the Hyundai to skid all the way across the westbound lanes of I-80, eventually striking the rear of a Honda and the side of a Kia.
The driver of the Hyundai was a 91-year-old man from Boonton. He was transported to the hospital after the collision, and he died of his injuries later that day. The driver of the Kia also sustained minor injuries. No one in the Chevrolet or the Honda was injured.
